A story in today’s The Tennessean newspaper reports that small contractors previously exempt from the workers’ compensation insurance requirement will be required to acquire the insurance coverage, even sole proprietors staffed only by the owner, when legislation passed by the Tennessee General Assembly goes into effect at the end of the year. Hardships on small construction companies have sparked discussion of relief, but the legislature will not reconvene before the law requires purchasing the insurance covering job related injuries beginning Jan 1, 2010.
Tennessee has in the past worked on keeping the workers’ compensation cost low for employers.
